Homebuyer pessimism continues to rise while some buyers may be looking to exit housing market – BizJournals.com

I was happy to speak with Ashley Fahey of The Business Journals for this insightful article on the US housing market. We are seeing some typical summer slowdowns, but other Boston neighborhoods are still red hot.

“Little inventory, record-high home prices, deep-pocketed investors and not enough new construction may be pushing some buyers to leave the housing market. Fannie Mae’s most recent Home Purchase Sentiment Index for July found increased pessimism among homebuyers. The percentage of respondents to the survey that say now is a good time to buy a home decreased from 32% to 28%. The percentage who say it’s a bad time to buy increased, from 64% to 66%.

But Mary Gillach, principal of The Gillach Group at William Raveis in the Boston metro area, said it feels like buyers have started to leave the housing market earlier than they normally do this year. “In a lot of markets, we started slowing down before the Fourth of July,” Gillach said, adding that usually doesn’t happen until mid- or late July. She said ongoing worries about the pandemic, specifically the Delta variant, have caused some homebuyers in the Boston area to press pause on decisions.”

Real Estate Boston – Downsizing in a Pandemic

Baby boomers downsizing during the pandemic delay their plans and reassess. “For years, empty-nesters in the suburbs have sold their longtime family homes and downsized to a downtown condo, where they could spend less time mowing the lawn and more time walking to theaters, restaurants, and Red Sox games,” said Chestnut Hill realtor Mary Gillach.

Jon Gorey, Globe correspondent, interviewed me for this article in RealEstate about the way baby boomers reacted on the housing market during Covid.

RE Agent Magazine – Is It Too Easy to Become a Real Estate Agent?

Sellers need to protect themselves in this inventory-starved market, as I tell Jon Gorey of the Boston Globe. “Anybody can sell a house right now…They won’t necessarily close, and they won’t get the best price — but it’ll sell.”
